Lasting Impact of Imperialism in Central Africa
There were many negative and positive effects of imperialism in the nation of Democratic Republic of the Congo which is in the heart of Central Africa. Some of the lasting impacts of imperialism on Central Africa are that millions of Africans died due to new diseases and resistance movements, the literacy was improved and schools and hospitals were provided. This information will all be referring to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
To being with, a negative lasting impact of imperialism in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (The heart of Central Africa) was that many Africans died due to new diseases and resistance movements. Since the Europeans were bringing in new germs from Europe that the African natives weren’t used to, the Africans started developing new diseases that their body was not immune too. Same goes for the Europeans, when they went to Central Africa many of the germs occupied by the African natives spread to them and they started developing diseases. Diseases were not the only way Africans were dying. The leader of the Democratic Republic of the Congo during imperialism was King Leopold II and he had a group called the Force Publique which enforced all the rules Leopold came up with. One of these rules was that if the African workers did not bring back enough rubber and ivory it would result in a serious injury such as: getting whipped or sometimes even getting your hands chopped off. Those weren’t the worst of it though sometimes this could lead to the death of an African.
Now keeping in mind that there were many more negative impacts of imperialism in Central Africa here is a positive impact: the literacy was improved. Although Leopold may have severely damaged the Democratic Republic of the Congo after he was overthrown of his throne there was a civil war and finally a single president came out of it. This ruler has provided many great things in Central Africa including a literacy improvement. Back when Leopold was ruler it was said that people rarely knew how to read or write but nowadays many communities in Central Africa have some literacy improvement since then.
Another positive impact of imperialism on the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the fact that schools and hospitals were provided. After the imperialism by Leopold a top priority of all the supporters of the Congo was to provide schools and hospitals for the kids in Central Africa. The schools help teach the kids and help make their literacy better than it already is. The schools are good; however, they cannot compare to the education that the people who live in different parts of the world get. The hospitals that are offered are not very developed hospitals but are very useful because there are many kids who die from diseases daily in Central Africa. The more hospitals that are provided, the more lives that are saved.
Some of the lasting impacts of imperialism on Central Africa include: Africans died due to diseases and resistance movements, the improvement of literacy, and providing schools and hospitals. As in other parts of Africa, Central Africa has encountered its fair share of injustice and imperialism. Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.”
Geography in Central Africa
One of the longest rivers in the world is the Congo River which is located in Central Africa. The Congo River cuts through the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and goes through part of the Republic of the Congo. The climate in Central Africa is also essential to life.
The Congo River serves as a major trading route from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the Republic of the Congo. Since they are trading items across this river it is obviously serving as a type of business that brings in a certain amount of money or sends out a certain amount of money for a certain amount of goods. Also not many people know this but the Congo River serves as a type of hydroelectric energy because of the dam built at the Inga Falls.
The climate in Central Africa is very essential to life because if it was like it is in North Africa (a desert) then it would be inhabitable. Central Africa has a different climate depending on what part of Central Africa you’re in. Referring back to the Democratic Republic of the Congo it has a tropical climate while a country like Chad and Cameroon have a tropical and desert climate depending on where you are in the country. Since most of Central Africa has a tropical climate it has a couple of rainforests within it. It is a great place for vegetation.
While many people in Africa are worried about not dying of diseases and other things many of the people are using the Congo River as a source of transportation of food and people. The river that goes through both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo also provides hydroelectric energy due to the dam built at the Inga Falls. Most of Central Africa has a tropical climate while some of the northern parts (still part of Central Africa) have a desert climate due to the Sahara Desert.
